Tornadoes and Root Canals
Last night our area got pounded by rare, powerful tornadoes. My husband's boss' neighborhood was flattened. So far, no reports of death, but all of the debris and flattened houses haven't been gone through yet. Fingers crossed that everyone (and all the pets!) are okay.
In less horrible but still icky news, this morning I'm getting a root canal. I'll probably be out of touch for a little while — paid meds make me sleep. A lot.
Okay, off to submit to the torturer dentist.

The Birdies and the Culprit
Okay, so the baby cardinals survived the night. Both ate well (every hour, mind you,) and one was very active and trying to fly. The other was hurt more severely — probably a broken leg, plus stripped feathers, and by morning, infection had set in. I took them to the ASPCA late the next day, and the wildlife rehabilitor emailed me late that night.
So far so good, except the severely injured one isn't expected to make it. She gave it antibiotics and subcutaneous fluids, but he was pretty hurt. I'm hoping to hear more later.
Here's the picture of the less severely injured one, being held by my son while I fed:

And here's the little killer — doesn't she look all innocent, coming inside the house to curl up on my son's sleeping bag? Heh. Don't be fooled…she's vicious!

Cats and Birds
Let me just start off by saying I'm a big advocate of indoor cats. Why? Because it annoys me when un-neutered outdoor male cats spray on my deck and my door. And it annoys me when cats destroy the wildlife. Case in point — Vegas, the stray cat we've been trying to tame and adopt.
In the last week, she's left us several birds and two baby bunnies.
Today, she caught two baby cardinals. My son rescued them from her, and brought them in the house, in shock and hurt. I used to rehabilitate baby owls, so I knew the drill — put them in a box, put them somewhere dark and quiet for a couple of hours. Eventually, they came out of the shock.
So I now have two fledgling baby cardinals to take care of. One is doing well — very active and chirpy. The other is pretty hurt, but it's eating well. So I'll try to keep them warm and fed (wet cat food fed by straw) through the night, and hope to find a rehabilitator in the morning. I'll take care of them if I have to — but finding the time to feed them every hour is going to be difficult. Not to mention exhausting!
If they make it through the night, I'll post pics. Fingers crossed!

She also listed 13 things about Joely Sue Burkhart's The Fire Within, which has a FABULOUS cover, and I can't wait to read! So check 'em out!
Larissa, who is going back into the revisions cave to work on the second Demonica book (whose release date has been moved up to February — woo hoo!)
