I have so been there. More than once. And pushing ahead has always turned out to be a wretched mistake. It’s so hard to stop and step back when you feel like you HAVE to keep driving forward, but it’s better than agonizing and straining to write a bunch of chapters that end up deleted because they are wrong, wrong, wrong.
Gah–isn’t that frustrating, Charlene? I don’t mind fixing stuff that’s fixable, and I don’t even mind deleting scenes that add nothing to the story — but deleting entire chapters because I sent the story in the wrong direction out of a driving need to produce?
THAT is the kind of thing that causes burnout. Ugh!

Oh, yeah, I am the queen of pitching and/or rewriting scenes; but cutting 200 pages of “you took a wrong turn back there” just HURTS.
