I Have A Bed!!!!!

I'm SO excited. I know, doesn't seem like something to get all worked up over, but my parents are moving out of the house, and they took the bed with them so I've been sleeping on the floor, and a bed is just so thrilling! :mrgreen:

Wanna know what my sleep number is?

Yep, I got a Sleep Number bed, and I LOVE it.

And yes, they are a little costly, and right now we need to be smart with our money. But darn it, a lot of the things we have now to replace items lost in Katrina are hand-me-downs, second-hand, or Salvation Army buys. And the one area I won't go cheap is on a mattress. I mean, we spend almost half our lives in bed, so why be miserable?

The problem for Bryan and I is that we are SO different in our mattress preferences. I'm a side sleeper and I require VERY soft sleep surfaces. He's a back sleeper and needs VERY hard. I'm not exaggerating when I say that he can comfortably sleep on a floor. I, on the other hand, wake up bruised, sore, and with my limbs numb from falling asleep.

We'd been planning to buy a new mattress even before the hurricane because the one we had was so firm that I had to pile loads of eggcrate foam mattress pads and featherbeds on top for a decent nights' sleep, which would make Bryan uncomfortable. (Plus, the mattress belonged to him from before we got married, and who knows WHO slept there before me, ahem. ) So we'd been thinking of trying either a Tempur-Pedic or a Sleep Number bed.

Now that we HAD to buy a mattress, I tried them both. Unfortunately, I'm just not heavy enough to make the Tempur-Pedic work for me. The toppers are great, but the full mattress? Not so much. Plus, the only Tempur-Pedic mattress that WAS comfortable enough for me was the super-delux-must-be-filled-with-diamonds model that cost over $5,000. I may not be one to skimp on comfort, but that was WAY too much to spend on a mattress!

So I got the Sleep Number model 5000 bed, and OMG—I love it. The dual air chambers allow for different settings for each sleeper, and the settings go from 5-100. I have no doubt that Bryan will want his set above 70. Me? I'm set at 25.

Now, this difference does cause an interesting appearance when the bed is made, but you know, maybe I'll just have to get a twin mattress pad for my side to even out the bed surface.

And make the bed EVEN SOFTER.

I LOVE my bed. Did I mention that?

What about y'all? Do you like soft or firm?

Oh WOW, I didn’t know you had to be heavy for the Tempurpedics to work! I’m a soft bedder. It has to be soft, had no idea my sleeping on my side was any indicator though, lol. Hubby’s a back sleeper, but he needs it mostly soft, too. My mother is a back PATIENT, though, and her bed is more like a brick. It hurts to sit on it. (that might have something to do with my butt being soft, though, lol)

I think my husband and I have the same problem as you. I’m a side sleeper, he’s a back sleeper (one only has to hear him snoring to confirm that!). We’ve managed to compromise up the middle though, without spending lots of money. I have been wondering about those sleep number beds, though.

Dee, the Tempur-Pedic people said that comfort is based on a couple of factors–mostly weight and body temperature. Unfortunately, I’m always cold, so sinking into the Tempur-Pedic material takes forever and just isn’t comfortable. The material is too firm for me. Naturally, Bryan loves it.

Thanks, Lynn! Yeah, my husband and I have compromised for ten years, with neither one of us 100% happy, so now that we needed a bed, we decided to do what we had to do to both be happy. He hasn’t tried the bed yet, but I think he’ll like it. If not, well, too bad!

I like a bed that’s on the firm side, but not really hard. I am much more picky about pillows. I sleep with a body pillow, a king-size pillow, AND a standard pillow.

I’m with you on compromising. Good sleep is definitely worth the extra cost. Congrats on getting the new bed!

So, a side sleeper needs a softer mattress? *That’s* my problem. You mean I could sleep on my side and still have feeling in my arm when I wake up? What would that be like?

Yay on the cushy bed! I need a medium surface. I like to sleep on my stomach and I don’t like the really really soft ones. :mrgreen:

Definitely firm For whatever reason, I don’t like soft beds. Fortunately, neither does Sean :mrgreen:
