Insurance Idiocy
And it just. won't. stop.
It's now been two months since hurricane Katrina. We have yet to see an insurance adjuster. Even FEMA has been to our house. But not the hurricane insurance people.
Bryan heard from the hurricane insurance people today. Today! TWO months after the hurricane. If this doesn't seem excessive to you, let me explain.
We can't do anything to our house until the insurance people see it. We weren't even supposed to move our belongings out. Um…had we left our belongings, the drywall, the doors, and, well, everything else in the house, it would be just one big moldball right now. We HAD to move everything out. We HAD to gut it. And because we had to gut it, and because we couldn't repair anything, our house has been left unsecured. Which is why it got looted. There is no garage door. No walls. No doors. The windows are broken. Anyone can just waltz right in BECAUSE WE AREN'T ALLOWED TO FIX ANY OF IT. And even if we decided to say "screw it, we're putting securing the house," we can't, because Bryan's boat is gone so much that he can't do the work, and we can't hire anyone to do it because there are no workers in the area.
Now, get this. The hurricane insurance people can't get to our house until NOVEMBER NINETEENTH. Almost THREE months after the hurricane. In the meantime, Bryan's boat will go out at least two more times, meaning the house will sit there, completely defenseless, open to looters and vandals. Do you think the hurricane insurance idiots will pay for any of it? Hell, no.
Angry? You bet I am. I'm going to be spending the next, oh, LIFETIME, raising hell to every agency that will listen. This is bullshit. Yes, we know that they are busy. Yes, we know that they aren't going to pay for much anyway, since they'll say that most of our damage was caused by storm surge (and for those who don't know, hurricane insurance doesn't cover storm surge because they say it's "flood," which it isn't. Bastards.) But still…we can't make ANY repairs on our house because they claim they need to see the damage.
I honestly don't think I can get any angrier. But then, the day isn't over yet.
P.S. Stay tuned for information on my contest, especially those of you who are doing the NaNoWriMo thing. This one's for you!
