Guest Author Day: Kait Nolan
May 20th, 2010

Hey everyone!

Every once in a while I'm lucky enough to score an author who is willing to let me be lazy and not post something of my own, and today I'm happy to introduce you to Kait Nolan. Who blames me for…well, if you read on, you'll see.

Welcome, Kait!

A favorite question of readers is always what the big idea was behind a book or series. It’s hard to answer that question about my debut paranormal romance novella Forsaken By Shadow without talking about the book that came before—a book that will never see the light of day because it was a total disaster. Okay, not a total disaster because I got a world out of it. It all started with this sexy wolf-shifter doctor and a really wacky dream. Larissa, I partially blame you for putting sexy paranormal doctors in my head in the first place (mmm, Eidolon). Between your demons and J. R. Ward’s vampires, I had paranormal on the brain.

The original premise was about a wolf-shifter who abhorred and rejected his wolf nature, existing as a sort of fringe member of his pack until his mate, a human, shows up, forcing him to embrace the side of himself he hates in order to win the fight for alpha and save her life. It was supposed to be a stand-alone novel, just something to let me get my feet wet in the paranormal again (which is where I started years ago before my long and drawn out trip into traditional romantic suspense).

Then the agents from the Investigation and Enforcement Division showed up. They’re essentially the FBI of the paranormal world, responsible for—as the name implies—the enforcement of paranormal laws and investigation of crimes in their world. They’re under the command of the Council of Races (imagine a paranormal United Nations as the ruling body of the paranormal world). Also under the Council’s command are the Shadow Walkers, the Special Ops Force of the paranormal world, who are able to manipulate and travel by shadow. Once the IED, Council, and Shadow Walkers appeared on my mental radar and I realized that there was a world full of other paranormal races far beyond the typical vampires, werewolves, and the like, I was lost. I got totally sucked into the universe I had created and realized I had a series on my hands. The prevailing question of the series is what happens if their greatest law—keeping their existence a secret from the humans—were broken on a large scale? What happens if a whole faction of the Mirus world (that’s my term for the paranormal community) actively seek to start the apocalypse (which literally translates into lifting the veil)?

That was about the point when that first book derailed. The story didn’t fit in with the metaplot I’d developed for the series (no matter how hard I tried to force it). I still love that premise, and I still love those characters, so they’ll get repurposed on down the line in a very unexpected way, as it happens. But that’s where Forsaken By Shadow came in. I wanted to write something short that was an introduction to this world, this problem. A teaser to draw readers in to the broader series. And that’s what FBS is. It is a window into the Mirus world, the first glimpse of how it all begins.

It starts when IED Agent Embry Hollister finds out that her father has been captured by human military scientists—and the Council has no intention of mounting a rescue mission. She’ll do anything, break any rule to free him. Ultimately the only person she can turn to for help is her father’s protégé and her old flame, Gage Dempsey, who was banished from their world a decade before with his memory wiped. He’s built a whole new life for himself as Ultimate Fighting Champion Cade Shepherd and doesn’t even remember Embry exists. All Embry has to do is find him, restore his memory, convince him to take on this suicide mission, help him regain his abilities as a Shadow Walker, and if they survive in the end, walk away again to protect him from the world that wants him dead. She can do that…right?

Forsaken By Shadow is available for $1 at Scribd, Smashwords, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and the iBookstore.

Win The Mammoth Book of Special Ops Romance!
May 13th, 2010

specops12523 passionate stories of hard-hitting love…

Stirring romance featuring the heroes of the Navy SEALs, Delta Force, Air Force Pararescue, the Green Berets, the Army Rangers and other special forces: men and women who live and fight in extreme danger to preserve our freedoms, defenders and protectors of all we hold dear.

This collection includes the work of bestselling romance writers such as Shannon K. Butcher and Stephanie Tyler and Larissa Ione, writing as Sydney Croft. Sydney Croft’s special forces couple, Annika and Creed, work for the Agency for Covert Rare Operatives (ACRO), all of whose members have special powers, while Shannon K. Butcher’s hero is an ex-Navy SEAL. But these fighting men and women have a gentler, protective side; hard-edged weapons when on active duty, they can be caring lovers, of special forces teammates or the civilians they protect.

Contains Sydney Croft's story, Code Word Storm.

For Nashville
May 5th, 2010

Hi all,

I'm in a serious deadline crunch right now, so I'll be scarce for a while, but I did want to pop up a quick post about Do The Write Thing for Nashville, a flood relief charity auction for the flood victims in Tennessee.

This kind of disaster always hits me hard, because my family and I went through the same thing during Katrina. We lost everything, and because hurricane insurance doesn't cover storm surge (WTF?) we weren't insured for the total loss of the brand new house and all its contents. Then, because we still had to make payments on the destroyed house, we had to rebuild in order to sell it — and the contractor stole 20K of our money.

Fortunately, I had the writing community, good friends, and generous strangers behind me, and thanks to them, we recovered our spirits, even if we didn't recover much of anything else.

So…to make a long story short, this disaster is hitting me right in the heart. I'll be making a donation, for sure.

If you are an author or industry professional who can help, here's the website. Auctions will be held soon, and it looks like there might be some great stuff up for grabs!

Here's the Facebook page as well!

The Lords of Deliverance Are Coming!
April 28th, 2010

The prophecies were there but no one listened. Until now.

They are the Lords of Deliverance and they have the power to usher in Doomsday…or prevent it.

Yep, got the official word…the Demonica spinoff series about the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse will launch in April 2011 with Eternal Rider, book 1!

The series title will be The Lords of Deliverance, and you'll meet the first hero, Ares (War) in Sin Undone. Very excited. The book is due to my editor at the beginning of June, and I don't have NEARLY enough done yet, so I'll be a little quiet until I get Ares wrestled into submission. (As if…the dude is called War for a reason.)

Then, after I turn in Eternal Rider, Steph and I have to rock out the sixth ACRO book by the beginning of July, so again, I'll be pretty busy. I figure all of July and August will be taken by revisions to both books, so yeah, summer is looking kind of scary, time-wise!

Hope all is well with you, and that spring is treating you well!

Have a nice week, everyone!

Hugs!

Website Update!
April 21st, 2010

tempt200FINALLY! Stephanie Tyler and I got our Sydney Croft site updated with new pages and excerpts for upcoming releases. So if you've been wondering about Tempting The Fire, the page is all set to go!

Hope you have all been well! I'm going to be a little scarce — between deadlines and some medical issues, I'm going to be unplugging a bit.

Have a great day, everyone!

Quick Question
April 18th, 2010

demonduckTotally out of the blue, but I have two questions about author promotional items.

1. What's the best promotional item you ever received from an author? (My most used favorites are a cat food can cover I got from Linda Lael Miller and a jar opener from Geri Krotow. My other favorites include a shot glass from Jacquelyn Frank.)

2. Do you enjoy the smaller items like bookmarks and pens? As in, do you use them or toss them?

Thanks, everyone! Hope you're having a nice weekend!!!!

Things I Learned From Watching Soaps
April 13th, 2010

1. It's incredibly easy to tamper with DNA and paternity tests

2. Guilty people never go to jail (or stay there,) but innocent people get arrested all the time

3. If you're a mobster, you can commit all the violent crimes you want, and people will still love you

4. The average person gets married 7 times

5. Condoms break easily

6. No one stays dead

7. All women need to be institutionalized at some point in their lives

8. If you're driving at night, you will get into an accident or run over someone

9. If you sleep with more than one man, you will get pregnant…which will require a paternity test…which can be easily manipulated

10. Children/twin siblings you didn't know you had will come into your life at the worst possible time

11. No matter how badly you're injured or close to dying in a hospital, you won't need machines to keep you alive. All you need is a nasal cannula!

12. Planes are extremely unsafe, and they crash into islands a lot

13. If you're pregnant, you'll give birth under dire circumstances, and most likely, not in a hospital

14. If you need an organ transplant, someone who is your match (and who you know) will conveniently die at the last minute

15. Complete amnesia is really common

What have you learned from watching soaps?
